Felt with our New Alpaca Fibers
By Pokey Bolton
I chose to make this needle-felted and collaged journal cover with alpaca fibers, as they offer subtle options for shading and embellishment for needle felting.
Materials:
- 9" x 12" piece of craft felt
- Alpaca fibers
- Strips of scrap fabrics (I chose quilting fabrics in shades of white.)
- Scraps of lace
- Sewing machine and machine threads
- Puff paint
- Rubber stamp or Indian wood block with a bold design
- Craft paintbrush
- Fabric paint
- Needle-felting machine or hand needle felting tools
Directions:
- Needle felt strips of quilting scraps to the craft felt until felt is entirely covered.
- Lay down bits of alpaca fibers where desired and needle felt into place. I chose to cut the alpaca fibers in circles and squares and needle felt in place.
- Add smaller bits of scrap fabrics and lace on top of the alpaca fibers to help integrate the elements of the cover.
- Machine stitch with free-motion stitching or decorative stitches for added interest.
- Apply puff paint to rubber stamp with craft brush and impress stamp onto journal cover where desired. Heat impressed area with heat gun to achieve dimensional effect. (Note: Work outside or in a well- ventilated area and wear a protective mask so you do not inhale fumes.)
- Apply fabric paint to puff paint design to match or contrast with colors of journal cover.
- Zigzag stitch along the perimeter of the cover.
- Add signatures of pages for interior of journal.
- You can make this project with our new alpaca roving from Alpacas of Springbrook Farm. Each pack contains five yards of superior quality fiber. Choose from Peruvian Forest (Green/Yellow/Blue), Berry (Red/Purple), Sedona Sunset(Magenta/Yellow/Orange/Apricot), each $19.99/pack and All Natural (Tan/White Brown), $17.99
Perfect for hand or machine needle felting, wet felting, spinning, and mixed media.
